Cloister of Santa Maria Nova

Colosseum Archaeological Park - Roma (RM)

The project is an improvement proposal for the functional adaptation, the securing of the Cloister and the glazed closure of the arches to satisfy the need to expand the covered exhibition spaces. Closing the cloister with the new windows (placed on the loggias on the first floor and on the ground floor), allows you to air-condition all the rooms of the arcades. With this solution it will be possible to focus the reception services on the ground floor, while the arcades are integral to the Museum hosting part of the exhibition of the finds on the two levels.
The formulated proposal is to camouflage the construction of building site through a museum display of the same: the visitor will have the opportunity to enter the site and be interested in the development of the work or the history of the cloister of S. Maria Nova, accompanied by a narrative path created by didactic panels.
Another proposal is the insertion of a taut "velario", anchored to the roof of the buildings that insists on the cloister, to allow a correct flow of the water, eliminating completely the descendants and, at the same time, protecting the windows to bad weather, lengthening maintenance cycles and limiting costs.
This proposal is not only aimed to practical and functional aspect, but it also has the aim of being a consistent sign with the architectural space of the cloister in relation to the place and history.
