Isola Sacra: news challenges for a new restoration project
New project of the A61s with the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica: work has begun for the safety, restoration and enhancement of the necropolis of Isola Sacra.
The archaeological area called "Isola Sacra", in the municipality of Fiumicino, is part of the large burial ground of the inhabitants of the Port of Trajan, a Roman settlement that formed on an island that no longer exists on the Tiber River. Discovered at the beginning of the last century and immediately open to the public after an initial restoration, it presents a variety of buildings and decorative elements that are the mirror of the Roman population of this small maritime settlement between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
The preliminary study led to the identification of a state of widespread degradation: above all the rise of groundwater, aggravated by the recent effects of climate change. The project aim to act on the elimination of the causes of the various deteriorations, structural criticalities and restoration problems.
